On Thursday the Knoxville/Knox County Metropolitan Planning Commission approved this rezoning request for 18.3 acres of property at 1130 Mourfield Road in Southwest Knox County. The rezoning from Agricultural to Planned Residential will result in 3.5 units per acre or 63 units. The rezoning now proceeds to the Knox County Commission meeting in January on the 26th day of January 2015.
The current Commissioner position that represents a majority of the area is vacant. Former Commissioner Richard Briggs resigned back in November on the 10th of November. The Knox County Commission is currently accepting resumes for the vacant position. The deadline for applicants to apply is 12/15/2014. The Commission is not scheduled to interview and select a person to serve as the Commissioner until Tuesday January 20, 2015. The successful individual will serve until the next county election in 2016. However, the person selected by Commission will have only served 5 days before representing the district on a rezoning request.
Mourfield Road is a very small, narrow winding road that is no different than the farm trail it was when the county first asphalted it. The road carries allot of traffic for the thousands of homes already in the area. There are numerous accidents along Mourfield on a consistent basis. Putting another 126 or more vehicles turning onto and off of Mourfield is nothing short of a near disaster.
Only one member Janice L. Tocher (a City Representative) of MPC Board of Commissioners present on Thursday recognized the problem with placing 63 plus units on a narrow, road without any road infrastructure improvements.
