2016 Knox County Elections are Shaping UP

As reported here on February 10, 2015, it appears that Hugh Nystrom will be a candidate for the Fourth District County Commission seat. On Friday March 6, 2015, we reported here it appears that Jeff Ownby will attempt a re-election effort backed by a former Republican Chair.

On Saturday at the Knox County Republican Party Reorganization, Former failed Republican United States Senate Candidate John D. King (not to be confused with prominent, popular Knoxville Attorney John King) led the opening prayer. When King was introduced to have the prayer he was introduced as a Commission Candidate. Sources indicate that King will challenge Commissioner and Current Commission Chairman Brad Anders.

On Saturday, Former Property Assessor John Whitehead was warmly received and appears to be gearing up for a run for the position that he left in 2008. Also, Current and Term Limited Property Assessor Phil Ballard was present and sources indicate that he is supporting his Chief Deputy Jim Weaver for the position in 2016. Former County Commissioner, Interim Knox County Trustee Craig Leuthold continues to be mentioned as a 2016 Property Assessor candidate. Real Estate Executive Andrew Graybeal has been encouraged to consider a run for Property Assessor. Also, Claude Weems III an Appraiser and Appraising Educator has been encouraged to consider a run. In addition, sources indicate that Barry Hawkins a real estate executive has been asked to consider a challenge. Information from sources at the City County Building have informed us that pressure is being placed on current Property Assessor employees to support Weaver.
