Knox County Commission and School Board Have NEW Leaders

The lesson from the last 25 or so hours is that the Eighth District can have one or the other. You see Eighth District School Board Member Mike McMillan was the School Board Chairman last year and Sixth District County Commissioner Brad Anders served a second year as Chairman of Commission last year.

Yesterday, Knox County Commission met and selected Dave Wright of the Eighth District as Chairman, meaning that for last evening and today the Eighth District had their representatives chairing both legislative bodies.

Yesterday, the Commission selected at large Commissioner Bob Thomas as their Vice Chair. First District Commissioner Sam McKenzie was absent and prognosticators would predict that McKenzie would likely vote for Third District County Commissioner Randy Smith, the runner up to the Vice Chair election. Both Thomas and Smith were commission newbies last September. During the voting the Fourth District Commissioner passed, as the vote was 5-4 and neither candidate had a majority of 6 to be elected Vice Chair. The pass was asked if he wanted to vote and in somewhat a dramatic fashion of head bobbing and weaving, voted for Thomas. What was the Fourth District Commissioner considering as he bob and weaved his head?

This evening 25 hours after the Commission began their meeting, the Knox County School Board met, Seventh District School Board Member Patti Bounds was absence. Third District School Board Member Doug Harris was nominated and elected by unanimous acclamation. For Vice Chair, Second District School Board Member Tracie Sanger (who has served since a Special Election victory in November 2014) was nominated and elected Vice Chair. Ninth District School Board Member Amber Rountree nominated Sixth District School Board Member Terry Hill. Mrs. Hill declined the nomination. The School Board will be led by Harris and Sanger.
