Open Letter to Knox County’s Eighth District from Don Wiser

Retired Knoxville Police Department Detective, ETSU Graduate, Master of Education UT Knoxville, Lifelong Knox County Resident, Vietnam Era Disabled Veteran of the US Navy, and Limited government conservative.
Public engagement is vital to the health of our country’s democracy and the integrity of our local government. I have long opposed the construction of a new, unnecessary business park in the scenic Midway community. Using your tax dollars to build an industrial park is not only s slap in the face of those who live in–and love–Midway the way it is, it’s quite simply not the role of government to use your hard-earned tax dollars to gamble in the real estate market. Knox County never should have purchased the property in midway in the first place. Two wrongs don’t make a right: pushing ahead with this new industrial park despite its unpopularity; despite the lawsuit filed to protect the character of Midway, to stop the park’s construction; and despite the fact there are so many available acres in existing business and industrial parks won’t suddenly make it the right thing to do. While my opponent has defied the will of the people by seeking a fourth term–a third elected term–in office, he has also violated the State’s Sunshine Law, proving that he is sadly just a throwback to Black Wednesday and the self-serving politics all of the rest of us here in Knox County had thought had been left in the past, back when a Chancellor removed those incumbents from office who were ignoring term limits. Sadly, the shady dealings of the Courthouse power brokers have never left us. I want to bring integrity back to County government–your government. By relying on my military and then law enforcement experience, I will turn the page on the “bad old days” of business as usual we have come to expect from the City County Building.

My opponent has violated the Sunshine Law and abandoned the will of the people by seeking a Fourth term in office. During the 8 1/2 years he’s been in office thousands of Gibbs students have been needlessly bused all across the county. Instead of fixing our roads, my opponent has been pushing for yet another taxpayer-funded boondoggle; the totally unnecessary business park in Midway. He denied letting the Commission vote on a resolution that a marriage is between one man and one woman. With your vote I will work to widen the aging roads in the 8th District, put a stop to the Midway Park, and refocus public funds on our roads. Early voting begins July 15, 2016 with the General Election on August 4, 2016.
