How Much Is Too Much Money For A School Superintendent

There is a lot of discussion about the pay that Dr. James P. McIntyre, Jr. receives through his negotiated contract. Now, Hamilton County School Superintendent Rick Smith is expected to receive a $25,000 a year raise on Thursday when the Hamilton County School Board. Taking his annual salary from $165,000 to $190,000 a year for a contract of four years. Accompanying this article on the website of the Chattanooga Times Free Press is a poll. At this posting 2 votes in favor, 13 against. Clearly not a scientific poll. Still makes me wonder, how much money is the public comfortable with paying School Superintendents?

I have not criticized Dr. McIntyre’s salary or even Gloria Ray’s salary when she led the Tourism and Sports Corp. after all if I could get a board to award a contract I would take whatever I could. You can’t blame McIntyre, the School Board set the salary range before he ever applied. So if not him, it would be someone else.
