Barry Hawkins, Knox County Trustee Candidate Statement to Knox County Commission

Below are the remarks made by Barry Hawkins to the Knox County Commission following the item that David Wright after reading an article in the News Sentinel.

My name is Barry Hawkins, and I am running for Knox County Trustee. Although I was not given formal notice of this meeting by the Knox County Commission, I have come here today to clear my name. This so-called discussion has all the earmarks of a political witch hunt that smells of back room politics by my opponents.

I am surprised at the timing of this discussion with it being scheduled so close to the upcoming election and more than a year after the conclusion of the investigation by the appropriate officials. To me, this discussion should have been held at that time. Now, it looks like an attempt by Commissioner Dave Wright trying to intimidate a candidate running for election and abusing the power of commission to help a friend and a colleague.

CTAS, is designed as an educational program that has been in place for many years. I was encouraged to participate in CTAS by my superiors. While under the previous administration payment was received before completion of the credited hours of CTAS. After receiving payment I questioned the Trustee about the CTAS payment and he assured me that it was new office policy and procedure. Still with concerns about the payment I spoke with my office manager and Chief of Staff. They reaffirmed that it was office policy and procedure. I was in the process of completing my CTAS designation when and soon after my job was eliminated. Since than, I have spoken with the appropriate officials and the result of my discussion with these officials is that, I followed office policy and procedures and did everything I was instructed to do, I had done nothing wrong, and I don’t appreciate accusations otherwise.

The entire focus of my campaign has been to efficiently operate the Knox County Trustee’s office and reduced staff. In doing so, we can save millions of dollars that can be used by the Knox County General Fund and applied to our school system, our law enforcement agencies, and our senior programs. Thank You

God Bless America and God Bless Our Troops!
