Vote No on 2! Calls for Open Process in Selecting Attorney General

The “Vote NO on 2!” committee calls on the Chief Justice of the Tennessee Supreme Court and all members of the court to conduct an open public hearing for the selection of the Attorney General and Reporter. We also call on all eight candidates for Attorney General and Reporter to renounce secret proceedings by joining our call for public deliberations and a public vote by the Court.

“Electing the Attorney General is the only overt political act that is a duty of the Tennessee Supreme Court. I believe it is their duty to conduct all their deliberations in public and conduct a roll-call vote in public on the record,” said committee state coordinator John Avery Emison. “Anything less than that will leave Tennessee with the only state attorney general among the 50 states who is chosen behind closed doors in a secret proceeding for reasons that are obscure.”

Emison said this matter is “public business” and should be conducted “in full view of the public.”
