Is it Cronyism When Appointing People to Committees?

Yesterday, a notice went out about meetings of a committee that will meet about some changes to the Knox County Sheriffs Department and the Knox County Sheriffs Merit Council.

Meeting Notice

Commission Chair Larsen Jay, Commissioners Courtney Durrett and Kyle Ward were originally set to serve. Ward has reportedly declined, so another Commissioner will ultimately serve on the committee.

The surprise yesterday was the Citizen Representative. Scott Broyles, the 2020 failed candidate for the Commission seat that Ward won.

Jay was a supporter of Broyles. On October 20, 2019, on Broyles Facebook page showed Jay being the first signature on his qualifying petition.

D00B517F-683D-41AF-910C-4E7ECE233278Ward was outspent, out-endorsed in the Republican Primary, but Ward out-worked, out-hustled and out-lasted Broyles to win the March 3 Republican Primary.

Ward on the March 3, 2020 of Republican Primary received 60.97% to Broyles 39.03% or Ward’s 2,803 votes to Broyles 1,794 with Ward getting 1,009 more votes than Broyles.

The Republican voters in Knox County’s Fourth District chose Ward the business Entrepreneur over Broyles who runs the non-profit Safe Skies Alliance.

In the August 6, General Election Ward received 53.80% or 6,034 votes to Democrat nominee Todd Frommeyer’s 46.20% or 5,181, with Ward receiving 853 more votes to win the Commission seat.

Jay appointing his friend/crony to a committee is similar to the fallout from years ago when County Commission was criticized for appointing friends and family.

The News Sentinel sold a lot of papers with allegations of nepotism and cronyism of Knox County’s elected officials. Now they’ve become blind to it now.

Why does Larsen Jay remind people so much of Mike Ragsdale?
