Knox County Commission Set to Appoint a Magistrate on Monday

Former Magistrate Ray Jenkins position is about to be filled. Last night in work session the Knox County Commission heard from the two applicants recommended by the five General Sessions Judges.

Spencer Reed has been serving as a substitute magistrate. Commissioner Rhonda Lee asked him if he had ever been convicted of a crime, reckless driving over a decade ago was the answer. We all make a mistake or three, I am thankful we are not defined by them.

Attorney Troy B Jones also recommended by the Judges was up next. Commussioner John Schoonmaker asked if he voted in Knox County. Mr. Jones said yes. However, Jones could have reminded Schoonmaker that in November 2020 he was an Independent candidate for TN State House District 15, here. Lee again asked her question, yes Jones has a drug conviction, served his sentence and is an Attorney today, who has practiced for many years.

In kinda of an odd precedent, the Commission heard from a third candidate. Former Knox County Republican Party Chairman Daniel Herrera. He was one of 9-10 applicants that applied, however the Judges approved and forwarded only Reed and Jones.

Next Commission heard from General Sessions Judge Chuck Cerny they asked about the process of applicants and the Magistrate position and work.

Commission will approve one on Monday July 24. A Commissioner asked what would the Judges do if they selected one that wasn’t ons of the two, Judge Cerny said they would respectfully decline,
